Negotiators for Canada and the US are close to completing a sweeping border pact, which is designed to alleviate bottlenecks and align security procedures. The deal between the two countries would be the largest bilateral trade initiative since the Canada – U.S. Free Trade Agreement signed over two decades ago.
Growing concerns however over the willingness of the U.S. to loosen trade regulations is emerging among some Canadian businesses. Some Canadians are worried the pact may favor fortifying North American security at the expense of easing trade bureaucracy, and that tighter coordination between the two countries could compromise the privacy rights of Canadian citizens.
