The French enjoy one of the highest qualities of life in the world. Though taxes can be high, nearly everyone is taken care of, and the number of services one receives, from subsidised child care to allocations for home help for the elderly, more than makes up for the cost. The public education system is free to everyone, and some of the top leaders in business and industry are graduates of French schools. The national transportation system is comfortable, efficient and affordable, and one can cross the entire country in just a few hours.
Family is central to the social-cohesiveness of France and time spent with family and friends is highly valued. However, with others outside of their social circle, the French may appear to be private and reserved.
The climate and landscape is varied, but temperate for the most part. The south enjoys lots of sun, along with the healthy “Mediterranean” cuisine, the north has lush farmland, the sea is usually within a few hours’ drive, and of course, Paris is a jewel of a city, full of art and culture. The French are understandably proud of their history, and they make a concerted effort to preserve their heritage (patrimoine) through sponsoring cultural events and resisting change only for the sake of change. Though wary of any new technology, they will adopt it should it prove itself useful.
