Biofuel Pioneer
The Minister of the Environment, Nunes Correia, announced in Paris in September 2008 that Portugal wants to anticipate the European norm of using biofuel for 10% of public transportation by 2020. He claims that Portugal is strongly investing in using biofuels, proceeding from second and third generation use, and that the country has even proposed beating the 2020 deadline date set by the European Parliament. The Minister did acknowledge that Portugal does face difficulties in honoring certain provisions of the Kyoto Protocol, namely polluting air emissions.
