Older Motherhood a Trend

The recent news of two Swiss women giving birth to their first child after age 60 has shone a spotlight on a growing trend toward older motherhood, and its complications. With Swiss women giving birth for the first time at the average age of 30, some women find it necessary to resort to In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) in order to conceive. In Switzerland, however, the use of donor eggs is illegal. Forcing Swiss women to go abroad for treatment.

Michael Hohl, head doctor of the women's clinic in Baden Hospital, along with other Swiss doctors, finds it unfair that women in Switzerland are denied the option of using donor eggs to conceive. "We don't understand why oocyte egg donation is not allowed while sperm donation is. It's not correct to treat women differently," Hohl said in May 2008. Unfortunately, this law is unlikely to change any time soon.
