Brief Review
Traffic
Switzerland has one of the safest roadways in the EU, with fewer than two fatalities for every billion kilometres driven. Deaths from road accidents have been decreasing steadily. In 2005, there were 409 people killed on Swiss roads, a reduction of 20 percent from the previous year. A further 10 percent reduction occurred the following year and continues to fall. But while the rate of fatalities is falling, the number of serious injuries has increased. More than 5.000 people a year are seriously injured in road accidents. Because of this, the Swiss Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) has implemented the Via Secura programme, aimed at enhancing road safety. Measures include more comprehensive driver training, the reduction of speed limits and the reduction of allowable blood alcohol levels to .05 percent.
