For the first time in history, Swiss women have captured the most seats in the country’s seven-member executive branch. The achievement draws special attention, especially as Switzerland was one of the last European nations to grant women full suffrage.
Switzerland is largely governed by seven politicians from different political parties. These ministers form the Federal Council. Major decisions are made by consensus of the ministers and the presidency rotates on a yearly basis monthly among the ministers.
The four female majority now makes Switzerland only the fifth country in the world to have more women than men in its Cabinet. The others are Cape Verde, Finland, Norway and Spain.
