Background

Ageing in Switzerland

Switzerland has many attractive features for those looking to spend their retirement years here. The high standard of living, advantageous tax system and beauty of the landscape are just a few reasons. The Swiss elderly keep relatively active, participating in sports suited to their physical abilities, and by taking courses in various subjects to keep their minds sharp and which foster socialisation with others of their age.

The three-pillar social security system is set up so that most seniors are adequately covered to meet their basic living needs. The government encourages in-home care of seniors who have a difficult time caring for themselves by offering subsidies for in-home assistance rather than putting money into building more nursing homes. The Federal Social Insurance Office is responsible for policies related to seniors and the elderly.
