Brief Review

Housing

In Switzerland only slightly more than half the elderly own their own homes. The remainder rent or live with family members. There are agencies focused on providing care for the elderly, particularly for those who wish to continue living in their own home, but may need a helping hand. Care can range from live-in assistance available 24-hour a day at a set monthly fee or for an hourly fee, part-time help can be secured. Fees will vary according to provider and level of care needed and most insurance programmes will likely cover most, if not all, of the associated expenses for this type of care.

If unable to live independently, there are senior residences and nursing homes available throughout the country. The majority are privately operated, and many are subsidised by the mandatory health insurance that all residents are required to take out. However, depending on the level of care needed and the type of residence (private room versus shared, apartment, etc.) the subsidised amount may not cover all care needs. If that is the case, the facility can, on the behalf of the resident, request an additional amount from the government for that individual’s care. If that request were denied, the individual would have to pay the remaining balance due.
