In Switzerland, everyone over the age of 70 in possession of a driving licence who wishes to continue driving must undergo a medical examination every two years to determine if they can still drive safely. Although the amount of driving generally diminishes with age, and specific situations are also avoided, e.g. driving at night and during rush hour, the number of elderly people driving is on the increase.
For the most part, however, seniors take public transportation whenever possible. It is safe and efficient and it is common for the Swiss to give up their seat on public transportation for an elderly person. The Swiss rail service (SBB) offers a discount rail pass, General Abonnement, good for unlimited travel on SBB's network as well as on most privately operated railways. The card also entitles you to free travel on postbuses, lake and river boats and on trams and buses in numerous Swiss cities and urban networks –over 23,500 kilometres of public transport in total. The senior pass is available for people over age 64 for women and 65 for men. It is available for either first (3,700 CHF) or second (2,350) class travel. A monthly subscription is possible at 335 CHF for first class and 220 CHF for second. There are also special discount subscriptions for travel only within your region, the price depending upon the region you are in. Details can be found at the Swiss Rail web site.
